Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko has called on the government to establish a clear and transparent regulatory framework for digital assets. He emphasized the need for Belarus to keep up with global trends while maintaining strict state oversight.

Lukashenko has tasked agencies with defining regulatory roles for the crypto industry, including the involvement of the country's Hi-Tech Park, its main IT hub. He has also expressed interest in using Belarus’s surplus electricity for large-scale cryptocurrency mining, stating it should be pursued "if it makes sense."

Despite this interest in blockchain technology, the government has already imposed tight controls on its citizens. A 2023 decree banned peer-to-peer (P2P) crypto transactions, requiring all trading to go through approved local exchanges to ensure a "transparent and controlled" circulation of digital tokens.

This approach highlights a balancing act for the Belarusian government: seeking the economic benefits of crypto mining and regulated trading while avoiding the decentralized nature of the technology. The final rules will determine whether the country can attract innovation or if heavy state control will stifle its potential.
