Efforts by U.S. President Donald Trump to arrange peace talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have been rejected by Russia. Despite Trump's claims of setting up a meeting, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that no such meeting is scheduled because there is no prepared agenda for a summit.

This dismissal of diplomacy coincides with a significant escalation in military actions. Shortly after Trump's meetings with both leaders, Russia increased missile strikes on Ukraine. In response, Ukraine launched drone strikes on Russia's Kursk Nuclear Power Plant, reducing the capacity of one reactor by 50%. The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed that radiation levels remained stable despite the attack. Ukraine also targeted the Unecha pumping station, part of the Druzhba oil pipeline, halting oil deliveries to Hungary and Slovakia.

These attacks highlight a growing disconnect between Trump's diplomatic rhetoric and the reality of the ongoing conflict. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, a notable dissenter within the EU, has expressed concerns about the attack's impact on Hungary's energy security, as the country is highly dependent on the Druzhba pipeline. The ongoing military actions and diplomatic stalemate underscore the challenges in finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
