The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has announced that its Crypto Task Force will host a public hearing on October 17 to discuss financial privacy and surveillance. The event, scheduled to take place at the SEC headquarters, will feature experts who are developing technologies to protect individual privacy.

The purpose of the panel is to help the SEC and other regulators better understand new privacy-enhancing technologies and their implications for policy in the crypto space. SEC Commissioner Hester M. Peirce emphasized the importance of these tools in protecting people from "bad actors" by allowing them to control who has access to their sensitive data.

This new hearing follows the SEC's recent establishment of a Cross-Border Task Force, which is focused on combating fraud and market manipulation by foreign entities. This second task force will also target the "gatekeepers," such as underwriters and auditors, who help these organizations access U.S. capital markets.

Established in January 2025, the Crypto Task Force's main goal is to create a clear regulatory framework for crypto assets. With this upcoming roundtable, the SEC continues to play a central role in the ongoing conversation about crypto regulation, privacy, and surveillance.
