Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin believes that the Decentralized Finance (DeFi) sector is evolving into a credible alternative to the traditional banking system, capable of serving as users' primary bank account and a viable savings option.

DeFi's Maturation and Purpose

  • Primary Bank Account: Speaking at a Dromos Labs event, Buterin suggested that increasingly, people and institutions will use DeFi as their primary financial system.
  • Refuge from Fiat: He posited that decentralized systems offer a refuge for global users vulnerable to political interference and financial seizure, allowing them to move away from vulnerable fiat systems.
  • Beyond Speculation: The sector has moved past its early speculative phase, focusing instead on lower-risk and stability.

Security and Technical Challenges Remain

  • Ongoing Risks: Buterin tempered his optimism by acknowledging that DeFi is still contending with technical and security risks, citing recent incidents like the Balancer breach.
  • Security Progress: However, he stressed that security in 2025 is vastly improved compared to 2019 or 2020.
  • "Walkaway Test": He advocated for protocols to adopt the "walkaway test," ensuring users can always retrieve their funds.

Ethereum's Core Principles and Scaling

  • Core Values: Buterin emphasized the importance of maintaining Ethereum's core properties: transparency, common standards, interoperability, and resistance to censorship.
  • Scaling: He noted that Ethereum is scaling rapidly on both the base layer and Layer 2 (L2) networks, with L2 projects handling over 10,000 transactions per second. He advised developers to experiment with L1 as the anchor and L2 as the scaling engine.

Design Flaws and Privacy

  • Internal Issues: Buterin admitted to a design flaw in an Ethereum feature that is slowing down verification 50 times, impacting the $50 billion L2 ecosystem.
  • Privacy Solutions: He advocated for a hybrid approach to security and privacy, combining Zero-Knowledge (ZK) proofs with other technologies like fully homomorphic encryption. He specifically highlighted ZK proofs for preventing coercion in voting systems.

Defense of Staking Delays

Separately, Buterin defended the 43-day Ethereum unstaking delays, which have faced criticism from developers over long withdrawal times. He characterized staking as a "solemn duty to defend the chain," arguing that "friction in quitting is part of the deal," likening the commitment to a soldier leaving the army.
