Vitalik Buterin, one of the creators of Ethereum, contributed 30 ETH, equivalent to roughly $113,000, towards aiding the legal defense of Tornado Cash developers Alexey Pertsev and Roman Storm. This donation was facilitated through the decentralized fundraising platform Juicebox.

The transaction occurred on May 30, at 1:58 am EST, originating from Buterin's address vitalik.eth. The funds were directed to the "Free Alexey & Roman" legal fund on Juicebox, which had amassed 595.82 ETH, valued at approximately $2.2 million, as per on-chain data.

Prominent figures in the cryptocurrency community, including Vitalik Buterin, have consistently advocated for the use of privacy tools to manage digital assets discreetly. Buterin, known for his research on enhancing privacy features within Ethereum, has donated to support the legal defense of Tornado Cash developers Alexey Pertsev and Roman Storm through Juicebox. This action aligns with his past support for similar causes, such as contributing to the 'AssangeDAO' legal fund in 2022.

Messages of solidarity accompany donations from other supporters, emphasizing themes like support for freedom of code and the importance of open source principles. Tornado Cash, designed for private cryptocurrency transactions, has faced scrutiny due to its potential for misuse by criminals for activities like money laundering. Consequently, the US Treasury's OFAC imposed sanctions on Tornado Cash in 2022.

Legal troubles ensued for Tornado Cash developers, with Pertsev arrested in Amsterdam for alleged involvement in criminal financial activities related to the service. Charges were later brought against developers Roman Storm and Roman Semenov for their alleged roles in money laundering, resulting in Pertsev's recent sentencing to over five years in prison.

Storm remains detained in the US since his arrest in 2023, awaiting trial scheduled for September.
