Audrey Crews, who has been paralyzed for two decades, has made history as the first woman to control a computer using only her thoughts, thanks to a Neuralink brain implant. Her remarkable progress was recently highlighted when she digitally wrote her name, "Audrey," entirely through mental commands.

Sharing her journey on X (formerly Twitter) via her account @NeuraNova9, Audrey posted a photo of her laptop screen displaying her handwritten name, accompanied by a red heart and various colorful doodles, all created telepathically. She humorously captioned the image, "Here are some more of my doodles! I’m taking requests. Lol. Imagine your pointer finger is the left click and the cursor movement is with your wrist—without physically doing it. Just a normal day using telepathy.” This followed a viral moment where she first wrote her name for the first time in 20 years, an achievement that prompted Elon Musk, Neuralink's co-founder, to comment on the revolutionary nature of her ability to control a computer simply by thinking.

Audrey, identified as Patient 9 in Neuralink’s PRIME clinical trial, underwent the chip implantation last week at the University of Miami Health Center. She described the procedure, stating, “They drilled a hole in my skull and placed 128 threads into my motor cortex.” The Neuralink chip itself is roughly the size of a quarter. This Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) functions by interpreting signals from her brain's movement center, translating them directly into cursor movements on a screen. While the implant won't restore her ability to walk, it empowers her to interact with digital devices in real time using only her mental effort.

Neuralink, established in 2016 by Elon Musk, is dedicated to creating a direct connection between the human brain and computers. Its long-term vision includes enabling individuals with neurological conditions like paralysis to regain digital autonomy, and potentially to control prosthetic limbs or communicate without speaking.

Audrey is committed to sharing her ongoing progress, stating, “I’ll be home soon and we’ll post more vids explaining the process in more detail.” As the first woman to utilize Neuralink’s groundbreaking technology, her journey is set to pave the way for future advancements in BCI.
