New York City has taken a major step to position itself as a national leader in crypto innovation. Mayor Eric Adams signed an executive order on Tuesday to establish the Office of Digital Assets and Blockchain, making it the first mayoral office of its kind in the United States.

Mandate and Goals of the New Office

The new department will be led by Moises Rendon and is tasked with overseeing the responsible integration of blockchain technology across various city functions, including financial and public sectors. Key goals include:

  • Growing the City's Economy and attracting global talent.
  • Expanding Financial Access for underserved communities.
  • Fostering Collaboration between the crypto industry, state regulators, and federal agencies.
  • Positioning New York as a hub for compliant and value-driven crypto innovation, attracting startups, and promoting education.

Adams' Legacy Continues

The move reflects Mayor Adams' consistent support for digital assets; he famously took his first three paychecks in Bitcoin and hosted the city's first crypto summit.

Although Adams is withdrawing from the mayoral race and his term ends later this year, the creation of this permanent office ensures that his crypto-friendly vision for New York's financial modernization will continue beyond his administration.
