Philippine Senator Bam Aquino announced his plan to introduce a bill that would put the country's national budget and government transactions on a blockchain platform to increase transparency and accountability.

Speaking at the Manila Tech Summit, Aquino said he aims to file the bill in the coming weeks. If passed, the Philippines could become the first country to have its national budget on a blockchain. "No one is crazy enough to put their transactions on blockchain, where every single step of the way will be logged and transparent to every single citizen. But we want to start," he noted.

This move follows a recent initiative by the Philippines' Department of Budget and Management, which launched a blockchain-based document validation system on Polygon last month to combat fraud.

The proposed legislation is part of a growing global trend where governments are exploring blockchain for public sector use. For example, the U.S. Commerce Department plans to publish economic statistics on the blockchain, and another Philippine Congressman, Miguel Luis Villafuerte, has proposed a bill to create a strategic bitcoin reserve.
