Tether has formalized a strategic partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to bolster law enforcement and digital security across Africa. This move follows a massive Interpol-led operation that recently intercepted $260 million in illegal funds on the continent.
The collaboration focuses on three primary pillars to address the risks associated with Africa’s rapidly expanding crypto market:
- Law Enforcement & Asset Recovery: Tether will provide technical resources and expertise to help local authorities track and freeze illicit blockchain transactions. This builds on Tether’s history of assisting global agencies in freezing over $3.2 billion in criminal assets to date.
- Youth Education & Innovation: To prevent future cybercrime, the initiative will launch cybersecurity bootcamps and blockchain literacy programs for young people, starting in Senegal. Additionally, a student competition will encourage the development of blockchain tools that promote financial inclusion and security.
- Humanitarian Support: The partnership includes a social impact component by directing funds to the UN Voluntary Trust Fund for Victims of Trafficking in Persons. This support will initially target community-led organizations in Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Uganda.
By aligning with the UNODC’s Strategic Vision for Africa 2030, Tether aims to transition from a simple stablecoin issuer to a key player in global financial transparency and victim advocacy.
